Làdiri. Terra, acqua e paglia: il respiro della Terra Cruda in Sardegna

Pubblicata il 13 dicembre 2022, Làdiri è la mia seconda pubblicazione, dedicata all’importante tematica della Terra Cruda in Sardegna e al suo patrimonio. Prodotto in maniera totalmente indipendente da Nootempo X Books (nootempo.net), questo progetto ha l’obiettivo di trasportarvi in un viaggio unico alla scoperta di uno dei materiali più antichi e diffusi del pianeta.

Dopo l’esperienza fotografica di Lost in Karalis (sempre disponibile a questo link), ho ripreso una delle mie ricerche più importanti, cominciata già ai tempi dell’Università e che rappresenta uno dei temi fondamentali su cui si basa buona parte del mio percorso formativo e professionale di Architetto: il rapporto tra uomo e territorio nella cultura campidanese sarda, che sento profondamente appartenermi anche da un punto di vista personale. Infatti, sono nata e cresciuta in un piccolo paese al confine tra il Sulcis e il Campidano Centrale, Vallermosa. Le vicende e i luoghi in cui si sviluppa la vita di una persona, influenzano decisamente il suo modo di essere e il suo futuro e così è stato anche per me.

Per dare voce a uno dei patrimoni architettonici e storico-culturali in Sardegna, negli ultimi mesi ho visitato numerosi paesi della Terra Cruda, tra percorsi, centri storici, architetture, case vecchie e recuperate, con l’obiettivo di approfondire, studiare e ricercare questo importante tema della nostra cultura isolana: il Làdiri (nome sardo che identifica i tipici mattoni di terra cruda). Questo è un materiale incredibile! Naturale, nasce dalla terra e respira. Viene plasmato dalle sapienti mani artigiane dell’uomo, proviene da antiche tradizioni e ancora oggi si sposa con i temi dell’ecologia e della sostenibilità dell’abitare e del costruire i nostri territori. Questi ed altri temi sono i contenuti protagonisti di questa pubblicazione. 

Il libro non è tuttavia un manuale tecnico (per cui dell’argomento esiste già un’ampia e autorevole bibliografia), ma piuttosto uno studio che vi porterà a conoscere e capire come la cultura della Terra Cruda nasce, si evolve e arriva sino a noi. Conoscerete i luoghi, le modalità e le tecniche costruttive che sono state alla base della cultura campidanese per secoli. Il tutto arricchito e accompagnato anche da immagini di scorci, dettagli, textures e forme delle abitazioni in Làdiri, fondamentali per la comprensione dell’argomento. L’intento è quello di trasportarvi all’interno di questa magica alchimia tra terra, acqua e paglia, sperando che possa essere utile a diffondere ulteriore conoscenza e consapevolezza sulla tematica e a produrre uno scambio culturale reciproco e dal basso.

Mi sono sentita, in questo senso, di raccontare anche una storia e un’esperienza che penso sia la storia di tanti di voi: crescere in un paese campidanese in cui le case prima si costruivano con materiali naturali e in forte equilibrio con l’ambiente. Che la terra possa essere memoria, conoscenza, esperienza e ispirazione per le nostre scelte future. Làdiri. Earth, water and straw: the breath of Raw Earth in Sardinia

Published on December 13, 2022, Làdiri is my second publication, dedicated to the important topic of Raw Earth in Sardinia and its heritage. Produced totally independently by Nootempo X Books (nootempo.net), this project aims to transport you on a unique journey to discover one of the oldest and most widespread materials on the planet.

After the photographic experience of Lost in Karalis (always available at this link), I have resumed one of my most important researches, which began already in my university years and which represents one of the fundamental themes on which a good part of my educational and professional path as an Architect is based: the relationship between man and territory in the Sardinian Campidanese culture (Campidano is the central and southern main flat land in the island), which belongs to me also from a personal point of view. In fact, I was born and raised in a small town on the border between Sulcis and Central Campidano territories, named Vallermosa. The events and places in which a person’s life unfolds, definitely influence the way of being and its future, and so it was for me as well.

In order to give voice to one of the architectural and cultural-historical heritages in Sardinia, in the last few months I have visited several villages of Raw Earth area, among paths, historical centers, architectures, old and recovered houses. The aim was to study and research this important topic of our island culture: the Làdiri (the Sardinian name that identifies the typical raw earth bricks). This is an incredible material! Natural, born from the earth and breathing. It is shaped by skilled craftsmen’s hands, comes from ancient traditions, and still matches with the themes of ecology and sustainability of living and building our territories. These and other themes are the featured contents of this publication.

However, the book is not a technical manual (for which there is already an extensive and authoritative bibliography on the subject), but rather a study that will take you to know and understand how the culture of Raw Earth was born, evolves and comes down to us. You will learn about the places, methods and construction techniques that have been the basis of Campidanese culture for centuries. All of this will also be enriched and accompanied by images of glimpses, details, textures and shapes of Làdiri dwellings, which are fundamental to the understanding of the subject. The intent is to transport you inside this magical alchemy between earth, water and straw, hoping that it may be useful in spreading further knowledge and awareness on the subject and in producing a mutual and bottom-up cultural exchange.

I also felt, in this sense, to tell a story and an experience that I think is the story of many of you: growing up in a Campidanese village where houses were first built with natural materials and in strong balance with the environment. May the land be memory, knowledge, experience and inspiration for our future choices. Have a wonderful journey into the world of Làdiri in Sardinia!
